How trails work
The file, the layers, the editor, the install - and the road into SpeedRunners 2.
The file
A trail is an .srt - a zip with settings.trail and the PNG layers. The game's trail editor (main menu › Trails) writes them; open my trails folder shows yours. settings.trail is a binary list of layers; every layer carries its picture and the settings you see in the editor:
- Enabled: always, only at superspeed, not at superspeed, or never - that is why the previews have a Normal and a Superspeed button
- Order and Layer (behind or in front of the runner)
- a ribbon layer: the picture stretched along the runner's path - LifeTime (how far back it reaches, in seconds), Size (its thickness in pixels; the runner is about 100), Taper, FadeOut (+ speed), Color, Opacity, OffsetVector (mirrored when running left), flips, Force right side Up, Noise and a sine wave (amplitude, frequency, phase) for wavy trails
- a particle layer: copies of the picture thrown from the runner - Spawn Rate, Amount, LifeTime, Scale (+ speed, variance), Rotation (+ speed, variances), Force and Direction (+ variances, in the runner's axes or the world's), gravity, FadeOut, and a sprite sheet (SpriteSize, SpriteCount, spriteMode default / random / animated at FPS)
- a sprite layer: a picture riding along at the runner - Offset, Scale, its frames (SpriteCount, Start / End frame, FPS, Loop), FadeIn / FadeOut when it switches on or off
The previews here, and the DART mod in SpeedRunners 2, draw all three the same way.
Install in SpeedRunners 1
- Download the
.srtfrom a trail's page. - Put it in
Documents\SavedGames\SpeedRunners\CEngineStorage\AllPlayers\Trails\Local\Import\. - Start the game: it is imported and listed under Trails. Custom trails show on your own screen; only item-store trails show to other players.
A Workshop trail is a folder instead (SpeedRunners\WorkshopContent\<id>\ with settings.trail, an icon and the PNGs): subscribe and the game installs it. Dropping such a folder's files on the upload page turns it into an .srt.
SpeedRunners 2
SpeedRunners 2 has no trail editor and no custom trails of its own. The DART mod fills that in: every trail approved here is synced to every DART player and drawn behind the runner by the same layer rules - the superspeed layers light up at superspeed, exactly like the preview. Pick one under DART's Trails tab.
