Install guide
Where the files are, what a skin replaces, how to undo it.
The game folder
Steam › right-click SpeedRunners › Manage › Browse local files. Usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpeedRunners\. Everything moddable is under Content\:
Content\Characters\<Character>\- the skins (see below)Content\UI\MultiplayerHUD\- the HUDContent\Backgrounds\ENV_*\- the backgroundsWorkshopContent\<id>\- trails (and Workshop levels)
What a skin is
Each character folder has a set of files per variant (the game's own alternate colours are variants 00, 01, 02…):
animation_variantNN.xnb- the sprite sheet, every frame of every animationanimation_atlas_variantNN.xnb- where each frame sits on that sheetwin_variantNN.xnb+win_atlas_variantNN.xnb- the win screen animationheads.xnb- the HUD heads of all variants (one 100 px column each, 5 rows: normal, hurt, happy, alert, away)
A custom skin replaces one variant: its sheet and win files, plus a heads file with that column changed. Which variant you replace is your choice - the editor lets you pick.
Install a skin
- Open
Content\Characters\<Character>\ - Back up the files the zip contains (same names)
- Copy the zip's files in, replacing the originals
- Start the game, pick the character and that variant
Undo
Put your backups back, or in Steam: Properties › Installed files › Verify integrity of game files - Steam re-downloads every changed file. That also removes all installed skins, so keep the zips.
The .xnb format
.xnb is XNA's content container. The game's files are LZX-compressed textures; the editor writes uncompressed ones (bigger on disk, loads the same) because the game reads both. A PNG renamed to .xnb does not work for most characters - use the editor's converter.
Other players
SpeedRunners 1 draws every runner from the local files, so only you see your skin unless friends install it too. Share the zip, or submit it to the archive.
